Happy Halloween From WHERE!

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 31, 2007

It’s haunting time again, and all of us here at WHERE want to wish you and all of your little ghouls, goblins, ghosties and long-legged baddies a very Happy Halloween!

Finish up your work early today, get your kids in their costumes, or just get in costumes yourselves and get yourself to a costume party.  It’s the day for dressing up, it’s the day for handing out and raking in the candy, so start doing it!

Try using a WHERE Widget like the Pubwalk-Nightlife to find out where the parties are, where your friends will be and what you should dress up like!  Remember, be safe, a Happy Halloween is one where you don’t end up in jail, a hospital, or sicker than you’d get from just eating too much candy.  Be safe and Have fun!

World’s Thinnest LCD Developed

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 29, 2007
Prepare for graphics on your mobile devices to get a lot more clear, and a lot more, well, thin. That’s right, WHERE GPS Widget browsing might get a whole lot more fun and, pretty, for a lack of a better term.

LCD.jpgSharp has just developed, according to reports, the world’s thinnest LCD screen. At only .68mm thick, this 2.2 inch screen is sure to dazzle, and make your mobile devices a lot more mobile. According to the article over at Mobiledia,

“The development the new 2.2-inch Mobile Advanced Super View LCD is based on proprietary Sharp fabrication techniques for thin LCDs, in particular, glass substrate and backlight technologies. This new Mobile Advanced Super View LCD delivers superior image quality approaching that of an LCD TV thanks to a high contrast ratio of 2000:1, wide viewing angle of 176 degrees, and fast response speed of 8 ms, which are among the highest levels in the industry.”

Bottom line, it’s tiny, and it’s darn snazzy. Check it out, and brace yourself for the coolness of the new gadgets that use them!

WHERE Widget of the Week: Yelp!

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 24, 2007

Wanna know if something is worth it?  Wanna know if a restaurant is good, or if their food really does suck?  Want to know about a dentist, shopping, car rentals, movies, or just about anything else you can possibly think of, and want to know what your peers believe?  Yep, me too, and that is why this weeks WHERE Widget of the Week is Yelp.

yelp.pngIt’s pretty simple really, the WHERE Yelp Widget shows you what is around YOU, in that exact moment, and lets you read what other people think about the things you’re about to do, eat, see, or buy.  It’s like having 100 people in your ear telling you the cold hard truth about things.  Kinda takes the guesswork out of things doesn’t it?  Kinda takes the annoyance of having to REGRET things go away too.

Kinda cool is what it is.  So, head over, hook yourself up to Yelp and just know, I full endorse it!

NYC Cabbies Re-Strike Over GPS

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 22, 2007

I’ve mentioned it more than once here, the NYC Cabbies are NOT happy about having GPS units installed in their cabs, they’ve striked once, been overruled, and now, they are striking again.  Clearly unhappy.  Clearly.

That’s right, according to the article I just read, NYC Cabbies are striking for the 2nd time this year over the installation and implementation of GPS into their cabs.  They are irritated by the mandatory placing of GPS machines as well as credit card machines in their cabs.  They argue that it is an invasion of their personal privacy, while the people behind the legislation claim it will improve efficiency, productivity and the ability to get lost baggage back to their owners.

Regardless, this again, is worth watching.  While their striking efforts might be, in the end, fruitless, I will be curious to see what happens.

AOL & Their Mobile Ambitions

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 19, 2007

Quick one for you on this fine Friday!  I just found some more uLocate and WHERE ink while browsing the great big world wide web.  Apparently, for quite some time AOL has been absolutely itching to get into the mobile side of things, apparently that time is rapidly approaching and apparently uLocate and WHERE are possibly going to help that out.

Head over and check out the article and scroll down near the bottom for the descriptions of how AOL is diving in, and how uLocate and WHERE are going to possibly help them make some mobile widgets of their own!

Have a great weekend, get outside and enjoy the last gasp of Fall.

WHERE Widget of the Week: ZipCar

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 17, 2007

Happy Wednesday my friends, this week, for our WHERE Widget of the Week I’m picking one that was spoken about on Monday, and for good reason.

zipcar_widget.pngThis week, ZipCar gets our WHERE Widget of the Week status just because it’s so darn helpful for all you mobile warriors that can’t stop traveling.  Basically, ZipCar is a “car sharing service, offering self service, on demand car by the hour or the day. Zipcar has 3,000 cars available in 23 cities across the United States.”  Not bad folks, not bad at all.  The great thing is, the Zipcar widget allows members to find the nearest Zipcars on their mobile phone as well as instantly connect to Zipcar’s reservation system to select a nearby vehicle.   Yeah, find the car AND reserve it, all on your phone, and all automatically.

Sure makes the ol’ run around searching for a Hertz or Enterprise a heck of a lot more archaic doesn’t it?  Welcome to the future folks.

uLocate & WHERE Get some Ink!

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 15, 2007

WHERE.jpgJust found this awesome article over at GPSBusinessNews.com!  It’s so awesome to be browsing the feeds, browsing Google News and catching up on industry fodder and run right across something so directly relevant.

Nevertheless, here is the article, head over and check it out on their site as well!

uLocate adds Yelp, Zipcar and Topix to its GPS widget platform

uLocate today announced the release of three new widgets: Yelp, Zipcar and Topix to its location based platform WHERE, currently available for customers of US wireless operators Sprint and Alltel.

Yelp, a leading local guide, is a website where locals read and write about their favorite neighborhood businesses. In the two years since launch, “yelpers have written over 1.6 million reviews. Now, through the Yelp widget, users can find the top rated restaurants, gift stores or other businesses within walking distance of their current location.

Zipcar is a car sharing service, offering self service, on demand car by the hour or the day. Zipcar has 3,000 cars available in 23 cities across the United States. The Zipcar widget allows members to utilize WHERE to locate and view the nearest Zipcars on their mobile screen as well as instantly connect to Zipcar’s reservation system to select a nearby vehicle.

Topix is a Top 20 news web site (Hitwise, July 2007) and the leading news community on the web. With news pages for all 32,500 U.S. ZIP codes, Topix mobile leverages WHERE’s location enabled technology to feed users news or classified ads based on their current location.

Nokia Snatching Up Navteq

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 12, 2007

Thank God It’s Friday, right friends?  That said, today’s little bit of news is not about WHERE, but instead, about the entire GPS industry, and a pretty big transaction that’s about to take place.

According to an article I just read over at Mobiledia, Nokia is about to finalize on their purchase of GPS company Navteq.  Navteq has been a pretty dominant force in the U.S. when it comes to digital mapmaking, and Nokia as we all know, has been a pretty dominant force in the mobile realm.  Combine the two and some magic might be happening.  The final purchase price?  A paltry $8.1 billion.  Here’s a sweet quote from the CEO of Nokia as to the reasoning behind this purchase:

“Location based services are one of the cornerstones of Nokia’s Internet services strategy. The acquisition of Navteq is another step toward Nokia becoming a leading player in this space…By joining forces with Navteq, we will be able to bring context and geographical information to a number of our Internet services with accelerated time to market. We also look forward to maintaining and enhancing the services and support provided to Navteq’s existing and future customers.”

We’ll see what kind of things are going to be afoot…stay tuned to this one.

WHERE Widget of the Week: Burger King

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 10, 2007

Happy Wednesday everyone. Now, this week, our WHERE Widget of the Week is a little controversial. With all of the panic surrounding obesity, diabetes, and the constant, um, growing, of our nation, why would I be so excited about a Burger King Widget? Simple, Burger King is pretty darn good.

bk.pngThe second reason why this weeks WHERE Widget of the Week is the Burger King Widget, is because the Burger King that has been a few blocks away from where I live, here in Montana, is officially being torn down. Now, I’m not sad really, but it is kind of weird seeing as though it’s been there since I moved here at age 5.

So, in tribute to you Burger King, which, by the way does exactly what you’d expect…finds the closest Burger King to your location, this weeks WHERE Widget is for you. Thanks for all the Whoppers.

VOSNAP & WHERE Could Be Good Friends

Tyler Knott Gregson | October 8, 2007

Thanks go out to Jim for turning my eyes to this little gem of a company.

Basically the idea behind Vosnap, is this:  You post a question, and that question then gets voted on, Fast.  You get the results via text messages or emails and basically whatever it is you need deciding, is decided.  Now, when I say this company and WHERE could be friends, I mean it, if there was a cool way to combine the technologies and make it all GPS’able (not a word) I think it could really pop.

Nevertheless, the cool folks over at Vosnap also have a blog, so feel free to go give them some love, then come back and check in for the WHERE Widget of the Week!
