Tips
  • Have a friend test your app, do this more than once. This ensures that the ‘getting started’ process is simple and intuitive, and catches bugs that you might have missed. If your app requires multiple users, then have several people simultaneously try it out.
  • Handle ‘edge cases’ such as signed in, signed out, slow data connection, etc.
  • If you don’t have national coverage for your geographic content, make it easy for the user to get to the region where you have good content (e.g. a button or link on the home page).
  • Spend some time on design. Depending on your skill level, considering hiring a designer for the icons.
  • Come up with a consistent name and logo, it can be something very simple.
  • Incorporate graphical elements if possible. People like pictures. But keep images sizes small.
  • Make use of the uLocate developer forums to get advice.

WHERE Widget of the Week: Proxido

Tyler Knott Gregson | March 26, 2008

Ever driven right past the grocery store and totally spaced out the fact that you need milk, cereal, eggs, and toilet paper?  Yeah, join the club.  Hate it?  Me too.

proxido-50x50.pngWant to do something about it?  Then do.  That’s right friends, this week for our WHERE Widget of the Week we have something that aims to reduce the number of times you have to get home, take off our shoes and coat, get settled only to have to get back up, get unsettled, put back on your shoes and coat and go back to the store.  This week, I bring you PROXIDO!

Basically, Proxido is a location-based reminder service that does exactly that, reminds you of whatever you need reminding of, when you’re in, around, or near the location you told it to.  In simpler terms, you drive by the grocery store, BAM it reminds you that you must 1) stop, and B) buy milk, cereal, eggs and of course toilet paper.  Nifty aye?  Nifty.

Head over to your WHERE account, log in and drag Proxido into your list.  You won’t regret it and the next time you’re at home eating your scrambled egg milk cereal casserole and wiping up spills with that toilet paper WITHOUT having to leave the house, you’ll thank me.

Google Claiming Era of Mobile Internet Has Arrived

Tyler Knott Gregson | March 24, 2008

Google, lets face it, knows their stuff.  That said, when they make an announcement about the direction they see web traffic turning, it’s best to listen, because it’s probably right on the money.  What does this mean for all of us?  Simple, we’re in the Exact right place.

Google’s latest announcement comes in the form of them claiming that the Era of the Mobile Internet is officially here.  Yes, we’re in it.  The days of the home based desktop computer are dwindling and heck, even laptops are being replaced by SmartPhones, iPhones, and the likes.

According to the article,

“In recent months, Google has seen an acceleration of activity among mobile phone users. The company said this is evidence that the era of mobile Internet is at hand. Google has seen sharp increases in mobile Internet usage spurred by services Google has offered on BlackBerry, Nokia and iPhone devices.”

In this Mobile Internet Era, it is becoming abundantly clear that the need to access your information ON the go, while you’re out, moving and running around, is of chief importance.  The ability to find out what you need, when you need it, no matter where you find yourself is going to set this era apart from all those before it.  Makes me very glad WHERE is so right on the money.

E911 Location Just The Start…

Tyler Knott Gregson | March 14, 2008

Well speak of the devil…Monday I wrote about the school in New Jersey requiring a purchase of a special GPS-enabled cell phone in case of an emergency on school property, and now I find another article about how E911 Caller Location on a cell phone being just the beginning of this GPS Mobile App market.

The article had some pretty intense, intelligent, and relevant things to say about how in today’s day and age, the need for services like this and beyond are so paramount.  The article mentions:

“Clearly, E911 is important, but it’s just the beginning -— not the endgame — in safety and security. Improved security in our day-to-day lives — the “everyday emergencies” that last only minutes and never make the news: the lost child in the mall; the late school bus; the failed rendezvous, on the ski slopes and at the amusement park — these situations can all benefit from essentially the same tools being mandated by the FCC.”

True.  Lets see what we can come up with to help keep Everyone safe, secure, and filled with the peace of mind we all love so much.

WHERE Widget of the Week: Irish Pub

Tyler Knott Gregson | March 12, 2008

“Everybody is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day…find your local Irish Pub for a little St. Patrick’s Day every day!”  I couldn’t have said it any better myself!  That said, this week I chose none other than the Irish Pub Widget for a very special and very specific reason:  It is St. Patrick’s Day THIS coming Monday!

irish.pngThat’s right folks, by the time it’s time for Next week’s WHERE Widget of the Week it’ll be too late.  SO, for this week, boot up your phone, drag the Irish Pub widget into your list and be ready, willing, and able to find the nearest Irish Pub at any and all times over the weekend and as we rapidly approach St. Patty’s Day!

That said, feel free to comment about YOUR St. Patty’s Day exploits between now and then…I’m half Irish, so for us, it’s more like St. Patty’s WEEK.

Mandatory Cell Phone Purchases for Colleges?!

Tyler Knott Gregson | March 10, 2008

Better safe than sorry right?  That is a viewpoint currently being shared by the head honchos at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey.  In light of the recent and extremely horrific school shootings taking place around the United States, they believe every student should have to purchase a GPS-enabled cell phone before enrolling.

Wow.  According to the article I just read,

“…students can use a timer that instantly alerts campus police if not deactivated within a set amount of time, assurance for those crossing the campus late at night. In an emergency, the GPS technology can be activated instantly to alert police. The university contracted with New York-based Rave Wireless for the safety technology and Sprint for the cell phone service.”

Working for a company like WHERE makes me excited that we’re at the forefront of technology Just like this.  So many of our widgets are pushing the boundaries of the tech and it’s amazing to see what comes out every single week.  Stay tuned, but sound off on how you feel about these “mandatory” purchases!

Cell Phones To Thwart Terrorist Attacks?!

Tyler Knott Gregson | March 3, 2008

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, working in this industry occasionally doses you with some Wow moments of “this is the future.”  I just so happened to awake this fine Monday morning to be bombarded with yet another of these, and it’s stuff like this that makes me very pleased to be writing about, and working in such a rad industry.

Today’s wow moment comes at the hand of a potential use of your ordinary cell phone in a much bigger, much broader, and much more awesomely important task:  Warding off a terrorist attack.  Believe it.  According to the article I just read:

“Researchers at Purdue University of West Lafayette are working with the state of Indiana to develop a system that would use a network of cell phones to detect and track radiation to help prevent terrorist attacks with radiological “dirty bombs” and nuclear weapons…”

Say WHAT?!  That’s right, CELL phones might provide the essential link to stopping and avoiding a nasty terrorist attack that None of us want to see on CNN later.  It’s stuff like this that makes having GPS in your phone a whole lot more impressive than we ever thought possible.  I love it.
